Generator shuts off

 Good evening all,

I have a 2006 Seneca ZX and have a couple of questions.

First is, has anyone found a quality LED headlight replacement, for the Kodiak?
I see alot of deals on Amazon but am sure most are crap.

Second, I fire up the generator and shut the main engine off as usual but now the 5500 Onan shuts down also. No trouble codes or anything...

Very puzzling.

Will the generator start by itself?  It sounds like it could be a simple loose connection.  Will it start if you push the start switch at the generator.?

Unfortunately never has since I've had it. It was my impression that the engine had to be running to get enough power to turn the generator over.

Not sure how your generator is hooked up. My Endura was hooked to the house batteries. It would start every time without chassis engine running. I remember there was problem with connection at generator. Also check connections at the batteries. Are your house batteries reading enough voltage.  My generator would not start if voltage was below 12 volts. Found this out when setting auto start voltage.

Based on Ron's idea, I would check battery voltage and the connections (including grounds) at the generator.

Thanks for the great info everyone. I got this back in June and I haven't been able to afford new house batteries so I've been putting off troubleshooting it ,instead just using the generator and it's worked great up until now, so I guess it's time to make it a priority,  I'll post what I ultimately find out thanks again!

we have a Gulfstream Independence 6319 on a C5500 chassis with the 8.1 gas engine. sometimes when we are on the house batteries overnight the generator will not start in the morning when we want to start the a/c. if we start the motorhome the generator will start off the chassis battery and the engine running, we then shut off the motorhome and everything is fine and the generator recharges the house batteries whilre running the a/c. in my mind this probably means the house batteries are growing weak and should be replaced but we most likely will not do that until they won't run the ceiling fans, fridge, etc. overnight at the race track.

Hey all, just wanted to post an update.
As for the generator issue,  I found that the 2 breakers on the generator itself were off and as soon as I reset them it fired up and stayed on when I turned the main engine off..thanks again
