Headlight Up Grade

Yahoo Message Number: 15555
I know for years the Kodiak Group has tried many up grades for the poor Chevy Kodiak headlights. After this weekend getting lost looking for a campground in the dark I am more than ready to up grade my headlights. What is the best way to go about it??

Help!

Hi Larry,
I bought the Kodiak HID kit from strictlyhids.com The guy that runs it is really friendly and has a very nice kit with wiring and all required components in a package. I am unsure of the legality of aftermarket HID headlights in your area, and I'm not even sure if they are legal here in California. I will say, after having them I will never go back. The stock headlights are without a doubt the worst I've ever seen, and dangerous. When the HIDs are aimed properly they are not offensive to other drivers. I got to a point where I didn't even want to drive at night before upgrading the headlights. Good luck.

Below is a clip of my dealing with Ray at Susquehannah MotorSports, and has contact info at the bottom. The headlights are much better than stock, although not perfect. I did the install myself, no big deal.

This is a written estimate for Kodiak headlight upgrade.
This proposal uses E-code H4 lamps with +50% Xenon bulbs in the outboard positions.
It also uses E-code H1 lamps with +50% Xenon lamps in the inboard positions.
You could also use H4 Ecode lamps in all 4 positions or DOT lamps in all 4 positions if desired for slightly more money.

The idea of using H4 bulbs in all 4 positions is that when you burn out an outboard low beam filament, you could still use that bulb in one of the inboard positions.

Call me to discuss or order. All product necessary is in stock now.

Not a easy answer. But my latest is LED headlights for the High/Low beams.
Installed H4 Glass headlight in place of the 2 outer headlights. Then purchased H4 LED high/low beams. Aligned the head lights with tape markings I made on garage door with my car 25' away. Set MH the same distance away and made adjustments.
The headlights are not sealed. So they need to be protected from spray when driving on wet pavement. I use some heavy vinyl that snaps in place inside of hood.
Here is link to amazon parts.
Amazon.com: Optix P.RA Diamond 4"x6" H4651 H4656 Rectangle Sealed Beam...
Amazon.com: 80W All-in-One 360° LED Headlights - Cool White 6000K 6K - Dual Hi / Lo Beam - Super White - 8,000 Lm - H4 / HB2 / 9003: Automotive

I have also installed Sylvania H4656 SliverStar headlights. They are much better than OEM but not as good as the LED's. They require at the very least a separate ground wire to the frame for each set of headlights. I installed 40 amp relays and 10 gauge wire for all my headlights. Doing a search should find the post where I did this upgrade. You will still need to do the headlight alignment above. Russ Hill and I did the ground wire and SilverStars to his MH. He is happy with this setup.

They are expensive but worth the cost. I added Truck Lite LEDs and love them.

I took it to the next level and did Tahoe headlights in my truck. I was just as scared to drive at night in my truck after driving it from Texas to Seattle. It was was bad that even the wife was ok with me spending the money on the conversion because it was a safety hazard. The Tahoe lights are alot of work but do help in the lighting department along with making the truck look way more modern. The other thing with the light swap was it set me up to take the next step to other HID retrofit options. There is no less than 1000 different options for Tahoe headlights with full projectors etc.

The other thing was after doing a trip from Seattle to Connecticut a nice set of driving/fog lights would be a good addition for some of the places we drove through that i wanted to see EVERYTHING I could due to animals.

I also had Ray from RallyLights build me a system. I am very happy with the results.

I went the replacement glass headlight with LED's. I bought the LED's from Rivco. It's a company that makes lots of parts for motorcycles and I've always had good luck with his stuff. I had to order the glass housings on Ebay.

Has anyone towed a 10,000 lb + enclosed trailer with one of the shorter Enduras? I'd like a shorter Endura for maneuverability, but am concerned about the stability of the shorter Enduras with the shorter wheelbase.

I don't know much about the Enduras but we have a 2007 Gulfstream Conquest Independence 6319 on the Kodiak 5500 chassis with the 8.1 gas engine and it tows our 28 foot Pace enclosed with no problem. Legally we are about 800 lbs over weight with the trailer at 9700 lbs with race car, golf cart, tools and fuel but the motorhome handles it with ease. We keep speed to the 60 -65 mph range in the right lane and there are no problems when trucks or busses pass. Our coach has the 13,500 lb rear springs with airbags and I run the bags at 90-95 psi when towing the trailer

Lee - Thanks for taking the time to let me know your experience! What air bags did you use?

I do not know the brand Dave as they were on the coach when I purchased it. The look similar to the Firestone brand sold to add to a pickup for towing or load control.
